From 27 August 2026, new rules allow plug-in solar panels to be sold widely in the UK, opening solar power to households that may previously have been unable to install it.
Also known as balcony solar panels, these small systems are already widely used across Europe. They offer a relatively low-cost way for people living in flats, rented homes or properties without suitable roof space to generate some of their own clean electricity.
At Bloom Renewables, generally speaking, we think that's good news. Anything that makes renewable energy more accessible and allows more households to generate their own power is definitely a positive step. That said, balcony solar doesn't suit every situation and there are practicalities for people to consider before investing.
What are plug-in solar panels?
Plug-in solar panels are small, portable solar PV systems that can be installed on a balcony, garden wall, fence, patio, shed roof or other suitable outdoor space.
Like conventional rooftop solar panels, they generate DC electricity from sunlight. A small micro inverter converts this into AC electricity that your home can use.
The surprising bit is how that electricity gets into your house.
Rather than being wired into your electrical system in the way a conventional solar installation is, an approved plug-in solar system connects through a standard three-pin socket. Electricity can flow both ways through the wiring in your home, so the solar electricity feeds into the same electrical circuit that normally supplies power to your appliances.
When you're generating solar power, appliances running in your home use that electricity first, reducing the amount you need to buy from the grid. Any electricity you don't use flows out to the electricity network.
How powerful are plug-in solar panels in the UK?
Under the new UK rules, plug-in solar systems will be limited to a maximum inverter output of 800W.
That's considerably smaller than a typical domestic rooftop solar PV system, which is commonly around 4kW or more.
Government estimates suggest an 800W plug-in solar system could generate around 400–700kWh of electricity a year, depending on its location, orientation, angle, shading and how the electricity is used.
At the upper end, that's roughly 2kWh a day averaged across the year. For comparison, a typical UK household uses around 7.4kWh of electricity a day. So, a well-positioned balcony solar system could potentially generate electricity equivalent to around a quarter of an average household's electricity consumption - although actual savings depend heavily on how much of that electricity you use while it's being generated. How much could plug-in solar save you?
Similar systems currently sold in Europe cost around £400-£600, before any additional mounting, electrical checks or socket installation that might be required.
The Department for Energy Security and Net Zero estimates that plug-in solar could save households approximately £70 - £110 a year, giving a potential break-even period of around four to six years.
That makes the percentage return on the initial investment potentially very attractive. However, there's an important distinction between return on investment and total financial return.
Plug-in solar vs rooftop solar: which offers the better return?
On headline payback alone, plug-in solar can actually look better.
According to Money Saving Expert's latest blog piece on plug-in solar, current comparison estimates:

These aren't directly equivalent systems and individual results vary considerably, but the comparison illustrates an important point.
Plug-in solar requires a much smaller investment and can therefore pay for itself relatively quickly. A full rooftop solar system costs considerably more but can generate far more electricity and much greater lifetime financial savings. There's another important difference. At present, households with plug-in solar won't be paid for surplus electricity exported to the grid. With an eligible professionally installed rooftop solar system and smart export tariff, surplus electricity can generate additional income.
So, we don't see balcony solar as a replacement for rooftop solar. They solve different problems.
Solar power for flats and renters
Perhaps the biggest benefit of balcony solar in the UK is accessibility.
Until now, solar has largely been something available to property owners with suitable roof space. Plug-in systems could give people living in flats and smaller homes an opportunity to generate renewable electricity too.
Because the equipment is relatively portable, it may also be attractive to renters, although tenants will still need their landlord's permission before installing panels around their property.
For households that simply can't install conventional rooftop solar, that's a significant development.
Is plug-in solar really as simple as plugging it in?
Not quite. Although the technology is designed to be much simpler than conventional solar installation, it is still introducing a source of electricity into your home's wiring.
The Institution of Engineering and Technology recommends having your home's wiring professionally checked before installing plug-in solar. You may also need a suitable weatherproof outdoor socket and ordinary extension leads should not be used.
Households will also need to notify their local Distribution Network Operator (DNO) within 28 days of connecting a system. The Government intends to provide a central registration service when the new rules take effect.
So we'd describe it as simple solar rather than completely consequence-free DIY solar.
Bloom's view: more people generating their own energy is a good thing
We welcome the arrival of plug-in solar in the UK.
For somebody living in a flat, renting a property or without a suitable roof, a relatively affordable system capable of generating hundreds of kilowatt-hours of clean electricity each year could be a great introduction to renewable energy.
For homeowners with suitable roof space, however, we'd still recommend looking carefully at the economics of a properly designed rooftop solar and battery system.
A larger solar PV system can generate a significant proportion of your household electricity, while battery storage allows you to keep solar electricity generated during the day and use it later in the evening. Eligible rooftop systems can also earn money for surplus electricity exported to the grid.
Plug-in solar therefore isn't about replacing rooftop solar. It's about making solar available to more people.
Whether it's two panels on a balcony or twenty panels on a roof, every household generating more of its own clean electricity reduces its reliance on energy bought from the grid - and moves us another small step towards a cleaner, more resilient energy system and more resilient local communities.
