Solar panels for farms
We are specialists in solar panel systems for farms and agricultural businesses, and have seen strong growth in the number of Devon farms investing in solar.
Bloom is leading the way in renewable energy innovations for farms in Devon and across the UK.
Farms sit at the very heart of our Devon community, and we’re committed to helping farmers reduce their energy bills, secure resilient energy supplies and lower their carbon footprint. Whenever we create a solar panel system for a farm we are always delighted by just how much money they can save by installing rooftop or ground mounted solar.
Farms are a particularly good candidate for solar panels because they often have large agricultural buildings with excellent roof space or land that can support ground mounted solar panels. For some farms the capital cost can be prohibitive, but there are finance deals available that make monthly payments less than the original pre-solar energy bills, so in many cases, solar panel installation on farms offer immediate benefits.
Benefits of solar panels for farms
Solar panels can go a long way to supporting a farm’s high energy needs. When coupled with a solar storage battery, it is possible to negate brown-outs and power cuts, ensuring a sustainable supply of power. With the cost of inputs fluctuating and the weather becoming more and more unpredictable, creating a resilient energy supply is one thing that can provide farms with some often-needed assurance.
We’re innovating clean energy solutions for farms
In 2024 we secured government Innovation funding from UKRI to pilot a Virtual Power Plant (VPP) which allows farms to buy and sell excess clean energy, peer-to-peer at a pre agreed price. You can find our more on our Innovation page.
We’re also piloting agri-PV solar fencing that allows farmland to be used for energy generation and food production simultaneously. Again, you can find more details about this project on our Innovations page.
Steps to implementing a farm solar panel system
Every system we design is bespoke and made specifically for the farm building or property depending on factors including orientation, shading from other properties or trees, energy usage and the limits set by the DNO (District Network Operator).
1. Initial Assessment
We audit your current energy usage using the half hourly data provided by your energy company which lets us understand the type and size of solar panel system you might require and any potential saving. We’ll also do a site visit to look at things like the condition of the roof spaces, position of the meter and structural integrity.
2. Design & Planning
We then use our bespoke software to model a system that exactly fits the needs of the farm’s buildings or land for a solar array. We’ll be able to tell you the cost and calculate the return on investment and payback periods. We can also look at loans and PPAs if it’s relevant to your project.
3. Permitting & Approvals
We’ll work with the DNO to get the relevant approvals for installation and metering agreements. We can also help assist with any planning permissions needed.
4. Installation
We have over 20 years’ experience installing solar PV, so we’re adept in most situations, ensuring quality, integrity and efficiency for your installation. Once installed, we will verify the system’s performance and safety and ensure that everyone that needs to understand how to use it.
5. Customer Care
We pride ourselves on providing excellent service and are here to support all customers at all phases of the installation, including once it’s complete. We offer an annual maintenance inspection and a five-year full inspection and service contract.
