Tesla Powerwall 3

Tesla Powerwall 3 is a new generation of solar battery storage systems. Powerwall 3 stores your solar energy for backup protection, so when the grid goes down your power stays on. Powerwall 3 is a fully integrated solar and battery system that makes it simpler for your home to be more energy independent. The Powerwall 3 also allows you to reduce your reliance on the grid and helps lower energy bills, either storing power from solar panels or allowing you to charge the battery with cheaper energy at night. Once installed, Powerwall can be monitored and managed using the Tesla app to customise system behaviour to meet your energy goals.

What’s new with the Powerwall 3

The Powerwall 3 has an integrated solar inverter: if you’re considering solar panels, installing a Powerwall 3 will act as both battery and inverter, saving you money. You can add it to an existing solar array or install it on its own.

The Powerwall 3 offers backup protection: if there’s a power cut, the Powerwall 3 will keep supplying your home with energy. With a power output of up to 11.5kW at a time, and a usable capacity of 13.5kWh, you’ll be able to keep you most needed appliances running.

The Tesla App gives you total control: manage your energy system from wherever you are. Set timers for the best times to charge up your battery, store solar energy or export to the grid. Make the most of smart-time-of-use and export tariffs, to use your energy efficiently and bring down your bills.

Comparing the Tesla Powerwall 2 and the Tesla Powerwall 3

Storage capacity

Powerwall 3 has a usable capacity of 13.5kWh. By looking at the data from over 600,000 Powerwall installations, Tesla were able to ascertain that this is the optimum capacity to provide a day’s back-up for most homes. By the end of 2024, 13.5kWh expansion packs should be available meaning anyone can increase capacity with no worries of National Grid restrictions.

Output power

Whilst Storage Capacity may be the same as the Powerwall 2, the Powerwall 3’s output power of 11kW allows high-load household items like heat pumps, EV chargers, electric showers and hot tubs to be powered solely by a single Powerwall 3, without needing extra power from the grid. Having the power available to run an electric shower means you’re better off storing energy in a battery where it will stay, rather than heating a hot water cylinder, just to watch the heat dissipate over-night.

Built-in solar inverter

Unlike the Powerwall 2, the Powerwall 3 has an integrated solar inverter (hybrid inverter) with 3 separate solar inputs (MPPT’s). With solar panels and battery sharing the same inverter, there is no longer a need to install a separate one, meaning a neater aesthetic and savings on installation price. You can literally choose your preferred solar panels, add a Powerwall 3 and you’re good to go!

Overcoming grid restrictions

Your local District Network Operator (DNO) can limit the power output or solar and battery storage systems, depending on the local grid’s capacity. Powerwall 3’s power and intelligent flexibility allows installers to maximise your grid connection, using the configurable output settings between 3.68-11kW. This also ensures your system is futureproof if grid updates allow an increased power output at your property.

Storm watch
Among the impressive array of features, Powerwall 3 has ‘storm watch’, an intelligent weather monitoring feature that anticipates severe weather conditions and charges to maximum capacity, ensuring you’re ready to go it alone in the case of possible outages caused by adverse weather.
