FAQ

These are the most popular Frequently Asked Questions asked by customers about solar PV and battery installation. If your question isn’t answered below, please do get in touch with one of the team: info@bloomrenewables.co.uk

Do I need planning permission to install solar panels?

For an on-roof system you won’t require any planning permission, so long as your property is not a listed building or is in a conservation area.

Do I need to talk to my electricity provider or distribution network operator (DNO)?

We will contact the DNO on your behalf, obtain the relevant permissions and make sure your provider knows exactly what’s happening. Unlike other solar installers, we do not charge for this service.

Can my solar PV panels provide hot water?

With the use of an energy diverter, any un-used electricity can be used to provide your home with free hot water.

How long does it take a solar PV system to pay itself off?

A typical 4kWp south-facing system will pay itself back in 7 years. It can take a little longer for smaller systems, or those not on a south facing roof – but we’ll calculate the estimated payback time after the site-survey.

Does it take long to install the solar PV system?

Our typical 4kWp systems can be installed and operational within a day.

How much does a solar PV system cost?

That depends on the size of the system that you’re after. Our smaller systems can be installed from as little as £4000, with our 4 kWph systems starting at £5500 (inc. VAT).

What type of panels do you use?

We typically install REC solar panels; designed in Europe, they are not only the most efficient panels in the world, but they have also been Solar’s Most Trusted Manufacturer for over two decades. They have the best warranty and least returns of any module on the market. They also have the best efficiency at high temperatures, so when the sun is out, it’s efficiency is even greater compared to rivals. Due to our commitment to quality and consistently high customer satisfaction, we’re privileged to be named REC Partners. However, we do also stock panels from a variety of other suppliers, to ensure you get a system that fits your property for the right price.

Do I need anything for the Smart Energy Guarantee?

To get the SMG, you’ll need a DNO acceptance for and an MCS Certificate. We will send off the DNO form when we commission the system and then they will contact you when it has been authorised. The MCS Certificate will be completed by us and then sent to you in your handover pack.

How do I use the power from my panels?

If you’re generating electricity from your panels, your property will always use that free electricity before it draws from the grid. You can continue to use your appliances as normal.

What is an inverter?

Panels produces Direct Current (DC) like a mobile phone or car battery, but your property and the grid work on Alternating Current (AC). An inverter converts DC to AC allowing power to synchronise with your house so that it’s in a usable format.

What if my roof isn’t South facing?

Although South facing roofs are the best, your system will work on any roof that receives light. If you’re concerned about your orientation, get in touch and we can use a piece of software to calculate how much electricity you could generate.

How do I measure my annual consumption?

If it’s not written on your energy bill, your energy supplier should be able to tell you your annual electricity consumption. We’ll also need half-hourly readings so that we can make an accurate calculation of your energy usage, but if you give us permission, we can liaise with your energy supplier on your behalf.

How much electricity can I generate from Solar panels?

A south-facing roof with a 4kWp solar system can generate over 4000 units (kWh) per year. On average, a household will use around 3500 units per year, so with a good system you can run your home as a net producer of clean energy. A battery can then help you to match your production to your consumption by storing excess energy when you don’t need it for night time use, or when your consumption is high such as meal times.

Can I fit solar panels around Velux windows?

Yes, we have specific systems that can be fitted around Velux windows.

TESLA BATTERY FAQS

What is a powerwall?

Powerwall is a rechargeable battery for your home, that stores energy, either from the grid or a Solar PV system, and makes it available on demand. It’s compact, sleek and easy to integrate into your property.

More..

Can I add a Powerwall to my existing solar PV system?
Yes, adding a Powerwall to your property with an existing Solar PV system is a good way to boost your investment and reduce your bills. Any excess generation will be stored for later use, helping you to get the most out of your system.

What makes up a Powerwall system?
A Powerwall system is made up of at least one Powerwall battery and a Gateway. The Gateway monitors the system, provides energy management and metering, and can work with up to 10 Powerwall batteries. It can also receive over-the-air updates, so your system will always be up to date.

What can I use the Powerwall for?
There are a variety of applications for Powerwall. If you have a Solar PV system, you can store your excess generation during the day and use that energy to power your property at night. You can draw from the grid at times with a lower rate, and then use that energy during more expensive times to reduce your bill. You can even monitor your real-time energy usage with the Tesla mobile app.

Can I fit multiple Powerwalls together?
Yes. Multiple Powerwalls can be used together to create a higher-capacity system. They can either be mounted side-by-side, or stacked front-to-back when floor mounted.

Where can I install a Powerwall?
Powerwall units are rated for use indoors and outdoors, so you can usually install them wherever is convenient for you. Humidity and rain aren’t a problem, but it’s best not to install them in areas that could flood, or next to water sources.

How does self-powered mode work?
When you’re producing excess solar energy, Powerwall will use this to charge. Then when your home is using more power than your system can produce, it will discharge to offset your use. If your Powerwall is fully charged, any excess solar generation will automatically be exported to the grid. If your home needs more than Powerwall can provide, it will automatically import power from the grid.

Can I charge my electric vehicle with Powerwall?
There’s no direct connection between your EV charger and the Powerwall, but you can use stored energy to charge your electric vehicle just like any other appliance.

Can I monitor my Powerwall operation?
Your Powerwall has an active internet connection so you can see exactly how your home has been using energy by using the Tesla app.
